Grand Lake Neighbors (GLN) is a group of volunteers working together to preserve and improve the Grand Lake district of Oakland, California. We are the Neighborhood Council for beats 14Y and 16x. Our mission is threefold:
- Communication – sharing information and keeping each other informed about issues in our area
- Solving problems – tapping into the incredible talent in our neighborhood to address specific problems
- Effecting change – being an agent for improving our quality of life
We work with neighborhood groups and individuals to tackle issues such as:
- Public safety
- Noise
- Attracting new retail merchants
- Supporting existing businesses
- Local cultural events
- Beautification and streetscape improvements
- Building Neighborhood Watch block groups
- Traffic
- Parking
Our original roots are in the Grand Lake Neighborhood Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) – part of OPD’s program to enlist residents and merchants in their crime-fighting efforts. Several years ago, we morphed into the Grand Lake Community Council as our way of acknowledging that crime is not the only issue facing our neighborhood.
In our latest incarnation as Grand Lake Neighbors, our primary focus is sharing information. We hope to foster an information network that provides broader communication among the many individuals and groups that typically work independently.

Please join us at our face-to-face meetings, the third Wednesday of every odd numbered month (January, March, May, July, September, November) at Barnett Hall next to the Lakeshore Avenue Baptist Church, 3534 Lakeshore Avenue, from 7:00 – 8:30pm.
